Hypnosis: What is it?
Hypnosis can be
defined as a state of increased concentration, a focused state of awareness
where you bypass the critical mind and work directly with the subconscious.
In this state you are more open to suggestions,
allowing healthier life changes to take place. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. No
one can force you into a hypnotic state. You allow the hypnotist to guide you
into a hypnotic state.
What does a Hypnotist
do?
Most things we
learn become part of our Autopilot System or our subconscious. These are things
we don’t have to consciously think about as we do them. For instance, picture
yourself walking or driving a car. After all the work you have done to master
these skills you now do them effortlessly. It becomes rooted in your
subconscious or your autopilot.
Problems arise when the map we have given to the autopilot is now
taking us where we no longer want to go. How do we give the autopilot a new map?
How do we get where we want to go? How do we make changes to benefit our lives?
This is accomplished by allowing a hypnotist to guide
you into a hypnotic state where you are open to suggestions. These suggestions
become part of the new map (or behavior) which your autopilot or subconscious
now begins to follow.
Q. Is Hypnosis accepted in the medical community?
A. In 1955 The British Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis by trained professionals. In 1958 The American Medical Association followed. In 1960 the American Psychological Association also accepted hypnosis as a science. There is nothing magical or mythical about hypnosis.
Q Will I reveal any
secrets?
A. A person will
never reveal anything that they don’t want to reveal because they are in total
control at all times and totally responsible for their
actions.
Q. Can I get stuck
in hypnosis?
A.
No. You need to have a consistent dialogue to remain in the hypnotic state. If
the hypnotist stops talking you will either fall asleep or emerge on your
own.
Q.
Will I lose control?
A. No. You will remain in control at all times.
The hypnotist at no time has control over the client.
Q. Can you be hypnotized
against your will?
A. Essentially, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You must allow hypnosis
to happen. If you fight the process you will win, but then you won’t be
hypnotized.
Q. Can I be
hypnotized?
A.
Most people are hypnotizable. There must be a willingness to achieve hypnosis
and follow what the hypnotist is saying.
Q. Is hypnosis a tool for the devil or anti-Christian in some way?
A. According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, the Catholic church (the largest Christian organization in the world) feels that "Hypnotism is licit if used for licit purposes.”
